Woodrow Wilson Class of 1970 Vincent E Reed Award for Excellence in Teaching
The Vincent E. Reed Award for Excellence in Teaching is presented each year by the WW Class of 1970. The 2018 award of $1,000 was presented at the 2018 commencement ceremony to Pamela Gardner.

Previous winners have been Maureen Thompson, Belle Belew, Desmond Dunham, James Leonard, Patrick O'Steen, Carole Huberman, Julie Caccamise, Lori Williams, Mary Barnes, Sarah Tilman (posthumously), Angela Benjamin, Gloria Gibson, Venetta Sloan-Akwara, Yvonne Bess, Jonathan Shea, Bruno Dahlgren, Kelly Edmondson, Valarie Evans Wheeler, and Elaine Smith.

As members of the Woodrow Wilson Class of 1970, we know that our school has a long tradition of devoted parents, skilled administrators, and most importantly, teachers, whom together nurture and generate productive, well-educated, well-rounded citizens. With this in mind, we named our award program in honor of Dr. Reed in order to institutionalize his own recognition of teaching excellence. Dr. Reed was the principal at Wilson during part of our tenure and he knew what it meant to strive high and achieve excellence. Dr. Reed knew how to motivate staff, who in turn could motivate students. He went on to become Superintendent of the DC Public Schools (1975-80) and Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education (1981) at the US Department of Education, before finishing his distinguished career as an executive of The Washington Post.

Our plan for this program was to make permanent a method for recognizing and rewarding excellence among teachers (but also including administrators and staff) who motivate students at Wilson with their unique skills and abilities. The Class of 1970 raised almost $20,000 for the original endowment from members of its own class, parents of students, retired faculty members, the WW Alumni Association, the PTSA, the Washington Post Community Fund, iGive.com, the Philip L. Graham Fund, and from Dr. Reed and his wife, Frances. The Class of 1970 Reed Fund allows us to give a minimum of a $1,000 award each year to the Wilson employee who most embodies the spirit of Vincent Reed.
